“My mentor has helped me both professionally and personally through navigating common workplace problems such as communication issues and working with various teams and stakeholders. She has also helped me personally as being in my 20s, there are a lot of self-exploration and critical junctures as to what I want to do and who I want to be in my life. An important takeaway I received from my mentor is that problems can always be solved—although the solution may not always be straight forward, sometimes you have to ask others for help and find new perspectives. What is also unique; our mentor/protégé relationship feels like a friendship—she is a great listener and provides great advice that fits whatever season of life that I am in. She also expands the definition of what it means to be a leader—sometimes it’s not the person who is extremely extraverted and is the first to take charge—sometimes a leader is someone who genuinely listens to the concerns of others and finds ways to solve problems to advance the organization/company’s mission. I am very grateful for the breadth of perspective that I’ve developed with my mentor.
