The New Year

April 21, 2017 About Us

Happy New Year!
As we begin 2016, it’s a great time to reflect about what we want the year ahead to be about. I think everyone takes time to assess your personal self as well as what you can do to make an impact on others.

The speaker at the January NEXUS Session spoke on the topic of “Building as a Leader” which gave great insight on how to be a better leader personally. Bartholomew Orr, Senior Pastor for Brown Missionary Baptist Church shared his philosophy on how to lead which includes Vision, Values, Vehicle and Vices. He spoke about each of these important points:

VISION-V.I.S.A.-A Passport to Excellence: Vision, Leaders must know their vision and communication their vision.

Integrity, Speaks of your character; being real and ethical

Structure, Everyone must be clear of the structure; have structure in your life.

Accountability, Always have someone to hold you accountable

VALUES-Leaders must possess and practice the right values. Integrity-Humility-Excellence

VEHICLE-Teamwork is the vehicle to get us to the top. Be unified.

VICES-Leaders should protect themselves from the vices. (Scandal, Slander, Strife, Success)

Obviously, through NEXUS I see those making a difference and impacting the next generation through Mentoring with the Mentor/Protégé relationships. I am excited also because we honor those making a difference through mentoring within the community with the Memphis Mentoring Awards which will be announced at our annual Leadership Luncheon on March 1. This year’s speaker is a friend that I have worked with throughout the years and is truly a genuine leader. Loren Roberts, “Boss of the Moss”, PGA Tour-Champions Tour Player will speak about those that have mentored him personally and what he has done to mentor others.

I look forward to seeing what the upcoming year has in store for myself, the NEXUS Network and you!

“Mentoring relationships are crucial for both personal and professional growth. Through NEXUS, I have had the honor of both having a mentor and serving as one. A mentor walking alongside you to rejoice in successes and coach you through difficult situations makes all the difference. Serving on the board of NEXUS allows me to provide that connection and opportunity for others in our community.” Amy Beth Dudley, Dir. of Donor Services, Community Foundation of Greater Memphis & NEXUS Board member
  • Mason Massey, Assistant Marketing Manager, AutoZone, NEXUS Class of 2022 Protégé

“This is a unique opportunity to engage with both, peers and mentors, on current issues facing Memphis and beyond that is difficult to replicate. The relationship with my Mentor is something that I value greatly and will extend beyond the dates of the NEXUS program. It is difficult to put the relationship into words, as it is more of a friendship with someone who has much more life experience and accolades, but it has grown organically without feeling forced and I am very grateful for that.”
